Our 7-week introduction to dressmaking course is designed with those of you who have already done some sewing in mind - if you can thread your machine, wind the bobbin and sew a reasonably straight line then you are ready!
Over 7 weeks most sewers can complete 3 garments, and through careful
pattern choice, can cover all the basics of dressmaking, including pattern
adjustments, zips, pockets and seam finishes.
If you are a slow and steady sewer with limited time between classes to carry out pattern prep (full tuition for this will be provided!) and don't have access to a sewing machine to make up any time necessary, you may decide to aim to complete 2 garments during the course, taking the 3rd pattern home to do at your leisure - if you think you fall into this category we can talk about which garments you would like to complete in class and which ones you want to tackle at home at a later date, before we start the course.
You can choose from a range of patterns we hold here at sewing school in sizes 0-26, or bring your own. We recommend the course structure outlined under the course structure tab above (below if you are using a mobile), but if you already know what you would like to make we are more than happy to be directed by you.
Fabric, zips and buttons for your garments are not included, if you opt to use our fabrics for any of your projects you will qualify for a discount (see below). We will provide pattern tracing paper, cotton and interfacing as needed.
- You will receive a copy of our sewing bible when you join the course - full of hints, tips and tutorials to support you during and after the course.
- You can choose 3 patterns from our pattern library to use during the course or at home.
- You will receive 15% off full priced items bought during the course and 5% off sale items, plus 10% off any sewing school events booked during your course.
You can choose from a range of patterns held here at sewing school (sizes 0-26), or bring your own pattern/s. We recommend the following course structure, but if you don't ever wear a suggested garment, or have already had practice making some types of garment, we can mix it up!
Weeks 1-2 The Skirt (trousers or shorts would be a great alternative)
- We recommend a classic a-line or full skirt.
- We will cover reading patterns, making pattern pieces, cutting fabrics, seam finishes and zip insertion.
Weeks 3-4 Tops Made to Fit
- We recommend a simple vest or short sleeve top.
- With the top we will focus on achieving the perfect fit, adjusting patterns, moving darts, adding and taking away fabric etc...
Weeks 5-7 The Dress
- Make a wrap dress, classic shift or cocktail dress, in cotton or something soft and drapey, or make a dress using jersey, giving you valuable experience sewing with stretchy fabrics.
We will be consolidating
all the skills covered earlier in the course whilst making a staple dress for
Where Are Lessons Held?
Sewing lessons are held in Ducklington, just outside of Witney. Details of the address are sent out with joining instructions approx 1 week before your lesson. The venue has onsite parking and is all on one level.
If you are booking a one to one lesson, or organising a group event of your own, we can hold the lesson in Ducklington (upto 4 people), on Cogges in Witney (upto 2 people) or at a venue of your choice.
Do I Need a Sewing Machine?
If you have a sewing machine we recommend using it, you will feel more confident and comfortable when back at home if you don't have to worry about differences between machines.
If you don't have a sewing machine or don't want to bring yours, we have lots of machines available for you to borrow.
Just let us know at the time of booking whether you are going to bring your machine or use one of ours.
How Big Are The Classes?
We have a maximum of 4 students in each class, with 1-2 teachers, giving everyone lots of one to one support.
Is Fabric Included?
For the majority of our lessons, you can choose to bring your own fabric or buy fabric, at a discount, from us. For a small number of lessons, fabric is included. If you are not sure if fabric is included or not please consult the particular lesson’s webpage, or contact us using the form on this page and we will be happy to advise.
If your course includes fabric, we will contact you approx 1 week before the course to ask for your fabric choices.
If you want to buy your fabric from us using the available discount, contact us using the form on this page and we can arrange for an invoice to be raised with the discount applied.
Payment is required at the point of booking your place on one of our workshops or sewing courses.
If you need to cancel up to 3 weeks before the start of the class, we will offer you the choice of transferring to another date, or a refund minus a £15 cancellation fee (if we manage to sell the place this reduces to £5).
If you need to cancel within 3 weeks of the start date, we are sorry but we cannot offer you a refund or transfer. With less than 3 week's notice it is difficult for us to fill places and it isn't fair on other people who would have liked a place, had they had more notice. We can put you on a reserve list for a future date, and if we still have spaces 3 weeks before the start of a course, we will slot you in at no additional cost.
If you are attending a course which is more than one session long and you are unable to attend one or more session, we will support you to complete the missed work at home, if you want to make up the time with a one to one lesson it will be £25 per lesson.
