Piping cord helps you create a crisp silhouette when sewing. It is most often associated with cushion covers, curtain tie backs and upholstery, but can also be found in dressmaking, bag and soft toy making.
What Size Piping Cord Should I Use?
There are no hard and fast rules, if you are using a sewing pattern it will probably suggest a size, if you are working without a pattern here is our helpful guide:
- 2mm wide - is great for trimming clothing for adults and children.
- 3mm wide - is less suitable for children's clothing but is great for adult's garments, bags, cushion covers and other home decor projects.
- 4mm wide - is great for cushion covers and home decor projects where you want to make a feature of the piping.
- 5mm-7mm wide - these are substantial cords and are best suited to upholstery projects.
How Much Do I Need?
When measuring for piping it is important to add extra cord for wriggle room and making joins, we recommend adding at least 10cm when measuring up.
You can buy by the mtr - the more you order the longer your piece gets, or in great value pre-cut packs - the larger the pack, the bigger the discount!
